Buffy the Vampire Slayer - Hush

Hush.

The monsters in this episode consist of "The Gentlemen". The Gentleman are a group of demons that originate from a fairytale. They travel from town to town stealing the voices of all along with 7 hearts.

"Can't even shout.
Can't even cry.
The Gentlemen are coming by.
Looking in windows,
knocking on doors...
They need to take seven
and they might take yours...
Can't call to mom.
Can't say a word.
You're gonna die screaming
but you won't be heard."

The social issue that was prevalent in this episode was the fact that everyone has a voice, but not everyone uses it. Whether it's injustice or marginalization, sometimes as humans we often keep too quiet. Speaking is a sense that we wake up everyday expecting to have. However, this episode explored the fact that you never know when your voice will be diminished - so speak up. In the episode, Buffy explained how her and the boy she liked often babbled too much, but never got around to actually talking about their feelings for each other. But at the end of the episode Buffy's crush said "Guess we need to talk". The irony of this episode is that while we have a voice, we often don't speak of what we are thinking. But when we are stripped of our voice, suddenly that's when its needed the most. The stripping of our most popular form of communication enabled the characters to communicate in a different way. They were truly able to understand one another without speaking, which is the most organic form of life. The monsters in the episode, The Gentlemen, were the creating force of the silence. While most horror is composed of violent screams and scary noises, this episode proved that sometimes being silent is even scarier than being heard.

This episode taught me to use my voice while I still have it. Our days on earth are counted and there is too little time to not say how we are feeling or to stand up for what we believe in.
