I Was Made To Love You

The 15th episode in season five of "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" entitled "I Was Made To Love You" tells the tale of a lover named April who the audience later on finds out is a robot created by her boyfriend Warren. Warren leaves April stranded in his dorm room to wait for his return that will never come. In the mean time Spike returns in search of Buffy to win her back where as Buffy wants nothing to do with him. April shows up to a party that everybody is at and launches Spike through a window after suggesting that they should hook up after Spike becomes jealous after witnessing Buffy socializing with Ben . In April's search for her beloved "boyfriend", Buffy finds Warren to get the scoop on April and why she is looking oh so desperately for him. Warren explains that April was programmed to be his girlfriend and do anything and everything for him, most of all love him unconditionally. When April runs into Warren's current girlfriend Katrina, she becomes angry with the fact that she says that Warren is her boyfriend and thinks she is lying to her. April begins to suffocate her and threatens her to tell the "truth". Buffy and Warren show up just in time to the scene to stray April's attention away from Katrina and save her from death. Warren runs off after Katrina in hopes to win her back while Buffy and April break out into a fight. As April's battery dies and her life comes to an end, Buffy and her sit on the swings at the playground and talk. Buffy comforts April in her last moments as she slowly slips into an everlasting sleep.

Since April was programmed to love warren unconditionally she will walk to the ends of the Earth to reunite with her lover. This also means that even though she does not come across as violent, if you say something about Warren that angers her she will have no problem doing anything to get you out of her way.

April is an example of a perfect girlfriend. She is pretty, kind, and she would do anything for her boyfriend. Although April does not appear like a monster, she is because she would go as far as killing somebody to get to Warren. As pictured to the left April is strangling Warren's current girlfriend Katrina after she explains to April that she was Warren's girlfriend now.

April portrays characteristics of obsession and possession towards Warren which are signs of an unhealthy relationship. In the world today, this has become an issue because when two people become so comfortable in their relationship, sometimes you become obsessed with your partner with the mindset that you will be with them forever and nothing can come between you and them especially another lover.

This episode offers a new perspective about being monstrous because even though April does not have monstrous physical features, her love for Warren is monstrous because it is destructive to the people around him. Monsters don't always take the form of a beast with fangs or claws. Monsters can build inside of us when we lose sight of what is most important in life.
